Tosca Schift is an artist working with film, performance, objects and drawings in cinematic constellations. She braids together colonial and pre-colonial cosmovisions: holding visions of life, death, nature and the sacred alongside their unravelling under capitalism. Here, she explores how the loss of roots fragments ancestral lore and epigenetic memory as ways of knowing and being.

Schift’s work draws on embodied research, dreamwork, archival material and craftsmanship. Her material-driven praxis is attuned to matter as a carrier of spiritual force, the body as a channel to ancient realms and the camera as a means of sensing what lies beyond conscious perception.

I work with perception, I’m a creator of things that might or might not exist or have existed or might someday exist.

I work with and against the capitalism, which is the child of the colonial fantasy.

I need to write an essay on:
Why filmmakers should become designers, why designers should become anthropologists and why anthropologists should become filmmakers.

Cine Expandido - It’s not beyond and it’s not behind, it’s...
Reflections on “It’s too cold for the spirits to live here”

The fantasy of the colonies are as vivid as

Sonic entrainment:

In expanded cinema environments, entrainment often happens through the interaction of image rhythm, projection light, and sound.

Examples:
  • looped film projections with repetitive sound
  • multi-channel sound installations
  • spatial acoustic environments
  • audiovisual drones.

Instead of telling a story, the work modulates perception over time.
